My Grandma recently moved to Austin from San Antonio. She moved from a cute little house into a tiny apartment. With the move came a lot of furniture she no longer had space for, and that meant stuff for my sister, my cousin, and me. She recently gave me the mirror shown below. It's really nothing special. Its a plastic frame with an odd brassy gold paint job. The paint alone is pretty off putting, but I love the ornate style of the frame! I had no other option but to paint it!!
I'm no stranger to the paint section at Home Depot. Since I've been living in my house (about 2 years now), I have done a whole lot of painting from the get go. Parker and I repainted just about every room in the house when we moved in, I've painted several thrifted pieces of furniture, and I painted our mailbox! For the mirror I decided to go with a bright fun color to contrast the really stuffy ornate style. After I primed the frame with Glidden gripper, I slapped on 4 layers of Martha Stewart paint in the color Mimosa. I've been warned time after time that the interior/exterior paint I use isn't going to stick to plastic or metal. The primer I use is recommended for all surfaces, and I figure the paint is only touching the primer so it shouldn't really matter. If someone wanted to be extra sure that their paint job was going to last the test of time, I guess you should use paint formulated for the specific material you are painting on. So far none of my projects have shown a mark of aging. My mailbox was the ultimate test, and it has been outside for over a year now.... I guess my advice for paint rule breakers is proceed with caution and don't get too mad if something wears off. But, Paint is Paint right?
