It has been really busy around the house for the past week or so! The warm weather has inspired/motivated Parker and I to get working on our Spring garden. Well, the growing charts have really been the real motivator... planting by a certain time helps you get the most out of your plants! We planted several different veggies, herbs, and flowers in a starter tray on Saturday evening and a few of the babies are already poking their heads up out of the dirt! The chamomile and cosmos are doing the best so far!
With the dawning of the spring garden comes the demise of the fall garden. We don't have room to start the new plants unless we remove our fall plants. Also, the soil also needs to be amended since we make it work year round with no break. We have decided to amend the soil by turning in compost this weekend, so we have a lot of eating to do before then. There are a lot of spinach, kale, collard, chard, turnip, and beet plants growing like wild out there!
Several plants were lost in the hard freeze a few weeks ago. It was sad, but not all bad! The broccoli and cauliflower plants looked like they had completely died even though they were covered with a tarp through the whole freeze. Parker propped up one of the pathetic looking broccoli plants, and it burst into blooms a few days later! It is the prettiest thing! I'm a little surprised that people don't grow broccoli as an ornamental! I guess it tastes too good to let it bloom.
I'm especially excited about gardening in the raised herb bed Parker built for me last weekend! It is 7.5' x 2.5', and just perfect for planting a few herbs in a very sunny spot in the yard! I'm expanding my herb collection this year and trying to grow dill, marjoram, parsley, lavender, and chamomile in addition to the mint, basil, sage, and thyme I grow every year. I'm also hoping to find a tarragon plant. I have read that they do not grow from seeds but from cuttings. I hope I can find a whole plant at a nearby nursery.
