Our landlord left a huge mound of dirt in the backyard when he replaced pipes outside the house long before Parker and I ever moved in. His solution for the giant mound of dirt in the back yard was to plant grass and other landscaping plants (mostly wondering Jew) all over it. Well, you really can't mow a big lumpy mound so it just got overgrown and ugly. Parker and I have taken it upon ourselves to turn the eyesore into a raised garden. This Sunday was the first chance we have gotten to really start working on it. It was a rainy day, but we toughed it out and actually got quite a bit of work done.
Parker spent most of the day figuring out the dimensions of the garden, marking it off with yarn, and making extra super sure that this thing will actually turn out rectangular.
I spent most of the day shaving down the sides of the mound to fit within the dimensions of what will be our garden. I somehow had a ton of fun doing this! Hoeing and shoveling are my new calling. I also have an uncanny knack for leveling out the ground. Every time I checked my work with a level I was pretty dang close to perfection!
Its pretty obvious what our plan is from the pictures, but we are going to contain the dirt in stacked landscape timbers. Thats why the level ground is so important, and why there are a bunch of timbers in the pictures.
Today is a quilting day. I'm supposed to work on the garden again today since I'm off work, but the weather is so yucky and It's really hard to motivate yourself to get out there and work in the rain alone.
