Since Christmas is gone I had to put away some amazing Christmas gifts from my mom and my ma-maw. I thought I would pay a little tribute to my cute new things before they are packed away until next winter.
My ma-maw gave me a set of Santa and Mrs. Claus salt and pepper shakers. She wrote the sweetest note on the box she gave them to me in. The note explained that the set was a gift to my ma-maw from her mom a long time ago. I never met my great grand ma-maw but she is an important person in my life none the less. I spent a huge chunk of my childhood at my ma-maw's house learning all kinds of valuable skills. Not many kids grew up making pralines, toughening up their hands in scalding water, and cleaning the bathtub with a little bit of comet while they bathed. My ma-maw is a tough country woman and she taught me a lot of the things I find special about myself. I can only imagine her mom was the same way and helped mold my ma-maw into the incredible woman that she is.
My mom gave me a Santa doll that my Pa-paw gave her when she was a little girl. I remember playing with the same Santa when I was a little girl as well! My pa-paw passed away several years ago but I always remember him fondly. The first song I wrote was about him, and I catch my self thinking about him every time I hear Johnny Cash.
It means the world to me to be trusted with these special pieces of my family history. I'm so sad to have to put them away! I feel like there is something a little bit alive about them!
